Dixieland Jazz concert

Sandor Benko is famous in Hungary as the leader of the Benko Dixiland band, purveyors of ragtime and Dixieland in a country where the genre is immensely popular. But 'Doctor' Benko, who studied under Leonard Bernstien, is a trained educator. Benko and his band will perform an educational concert for kids, in which he is likely to give short lectures in Hungarian between jazzy numbers. The music is fun and the audience will be young, so people of all ages and language abilities should enjoy the show.

The Ultimate Ball, Barber and Bilk

A rare opportunity to see three legends of traditional jazz and blues together on one stage. With Kenny Ball and His Jazzmen, Chris Barber's Jazz and Blues Band and Mr Aker Bilk and The Paramount Jazz Band.

OK Pizza

A mellow, Jordanian-owned restaurant in the northern Canareggio district of town, OK Pizza has a somewhat misleading name - it is actually the place to come for a taste of the Middle East, cooked up by the owner himself upon telephone request. The Sunday night music with an 'international' flavour is occasionally embellished with the appearance of a scantily-clad belly dancer - needless to say, this is a firm favourite with the late-night drinking crowd.

Cirkus Cirkor & URGA

New Age circus sans elephants, hay and pooper scoopers arrives in Prague, courtesy of the Swedish acrobatic team Cirkus Cirkor. Tightly executed high-wire manoeuvres, flying trapeze stunts and heart-stopping mid-air flips are the speciality of this troupe. Along with the usual magicians, mimes, snake charmers, jugglers and a good deal of clowning around, of course. The folk rock group URGA accompanies, adding a ska, reggae, dub and punk soundtrack to the overhead action. It all happens in the confined spaces of the Archa Theatre, so you may want to stick toward the back of the hall.

Bouquets to Art

The California Palace of the Legion of Honor's annual Prints in Bloom heralds the debut of the flower festival and art exhibition 'Bouquets to Art'. Magnificent flower arrangements are placed strategically throughout the museum, nicely augmenting the special exhibition of some 25 contemporary prints on the subject of flowers. Among the collection are daffodils by David Hockney, calla lilies by Michael Mazur, tulips by Richard Diebenkorn, and a single red rose by Wayne Thiebaud.

Children's International Holiday Party

In the frenzy that surrounds the Christmas season, the New Orleans Museum of Art offers a chance for children and parents (or grandparents or aunts or uncles) to have a pleasant afternoon that requires no preparation, no special outfits and, best of all, no gift-buying. Singing, dancing and storytelling are on the schedule, along with hands-on art projects. There's plenty of activity but the pace is civilised and the emphasis on fun.

It's a Wonderful Life

This Frank Capra Christmas classic has just been completely restored and the Filmmuseum is putting it's brand new copy to good use with an extra long run to save people from having to watch it yet again on their tiny televisions. Bring the whole family and a huge bucket of popcorn to watch as George Bailey, played by James Stewart, has his suicidal disillusionment turn to hope-embracing warmth with the help of his guardian angel.

Covering The New Yorker

A subscription to the New Yorker magazine is like getting a new work of art in your mailbox each week. The venerable American magazine's illustrated covers have become legendary, an artistic interpretation of the news and trends of the day. The Meyerovich Gallery in San Francisco hosts the magazine-sponsored exhibition honoring these artworks, 'Covering the New Yorker: Cutting-Edge Cover from a Literary Institution'. Presented in honor of the magazine's 75th anniversary, the exhibition features 41 well-known covers, from the witty and irreverent, to the controversial and insightful.

Scuola Grande di San Rocco

When this building is seen from the outside it is nothing special. Yet if you step inside one of Venice's least visited and therefore most peaceful edifices you will see something that you will never forget. The walls and ceilings on both floors are covered in huge, magnificent canvases by Tintoretto, who dedicated some 25 years of his life to embellishing the already richly decorated halls with some of his greatest works. Other works by Titian, Tiepolo and Giorgione make this one of the best visits in town.

Bobby McFerrin and the Philadelphia Orchestra

Those who remember Bobby McFerrin for only the insipid 'Don't Worry Be Happy' will be interested to learn that he has been conducting orchestras on a regular basis since 1994. A tremendous sense of passion and fun highlight McFerrin's performances, but he doesn't neglect his serious love of classical composition, as the programme of Tchaikovsky's 'Serenade for Strings' and Bizet's Symphony in C Major reflects. For it's part, the Philadelphia Symphony remains one of the most celebrated on the East Coast.
