Meloun

Yet another catacomb has been unearthed in Old Town, this one serving food that's a notch above the usual Czech fare of schnitzel and sauerkraut. With a medieval-style open fire for steaks and a French-accented menu of meat pies, gourmet appetisers and Provence salads, the food satiates without overpowering, all for an average of 400Kc (£7). But the bigger attraction here is the booking policy: live bands alternate with DJs, cult film screenings and Sunday evening poetry slams (whether Prague needs a further venue for the latter is another question).
